Larry the Crossing Guard

My son Kaiden used to be obsessed with handshakes. He would touch a complete stranger’s arm in hopes of watching my husband or I would shake the stranger’s hand while my son jumped up and down with joy. Thank you, COVID, for helping us break that fun habit! Every morning when we walked to school, I would have to shake the school crossing guard’s hand before completing my walk with Kaiden. I used to be so embarrassed by my son’s obsession.

But every single morning, Larry the crossing guard would gladly stretch out his hand to meet Kaiden’s request. We still see Larry every morning, but Kaiden no longer insists on handshakes. Now, a simple smile from Larry and a “hello” from me will do.

I look back on those days, and I think about how kind Larry was to Kaiden.  Kaiden wasn’t asking much, and Larry didn’t need to go out of his way to shake my hand. But every single day, Larry made the decision to make a little boy feel seen.  I mean, traditional handshakes mean “hello” or “nice to meet you.” But to Kaiden, Larry’s daily handshakes meant so much more. “I see you, little boy, and I’m happy to bring you joy.” The world needs more people like Larry the crossing guard, people who spend each day making those who are so often overlooked feel seen.

You guys are awesome, I mean it!
